Basic introduction to the game of rugby

Rugby is considered one of the most exciting contact sports today. This is a perfect blend of the hard-hitting physical nature of soccer and the speed and movement of soccer.

A rugby ball is somewhat similar to a soccer ball in shape and size; however, it is larger. Also, most modern versions no longer have laces. In terms of personal equipment, a mouthpiece is mandatory, while a soft padded helmet (scrum cap) is optional.

Note that the field of play in this type of sport is called the “pitch”. It is a large grassy area 100m long and 70m wide with uprights at each end. Behind the uprights is the goal area, which must have a minimum depth of 10m. Also, this is usually 22 m deep.

Players and their positions

Two teams will be represented on the pitch, with 15 players each. Each team will be divided into 2 separate groups: the pack and the backs. The group (represented by jersey numbers 1-8) will be made up of bigger, more physical players, while the runners (represented by jersey numbers 9-15) will be made up of faster players.

The object of the game

Scoring goals, known as “try”, is the objective of this sport. This can be accomplished by touching the ball inside the opposing team’s end zone. Know that any player can carry the ball and can score. One attempt equals 5 points. After which, a conversion kick will be awarded, allowing the chance to add 2 more points when successful.

Another way to score is through a “drop goal”, which is equivalent to 3 points. This happens during play when a player kicks the ball through the opposing team’s uprights. However, remember that for a drop goal to count, the ball must make contact with the ground before it is kicked.

Penalty kicks can also be awarded for various penalties. This is also worth 3 points. This is a free kick from the place of the offense or behind the 22m line.

Today, there are various professional levels of rugby. In some countries, there are different city teams, which are similar to professional soccer teams in different states. There is also the international level, which is considered the “big show”. The international teams will be composed of representatives of teams from cities in different countries. They are often the most watched rugby events these days.
