The Golden Retriever breed: the friendliest dog in the world?
The best family dogs come in many sizes, shapes, and personalities. Choosing your family dog is a very personal journey. Are you a very active family? Do you have small children? Are you away from home for many hours at a time? All these issues and many more must be taken into account when choosing a family dog.
Regarding the choice of the best breed or category, we leave that to the kennel clubs. But if there was one breed that many would consider the “poster family dog,” it would have to be the Golden Retriever.
This breed is incredibly beautiful and wonderfully affectionate. It is a medium-sized breed that was developed primarily as a hunting dog. Due to their intelligence, they are usually easier to train and therefore very obedient. This has led to their use as service dogs, in law enforcement, as guide dogs, and as search and rescue dogs. The breed tends to need a lot of space and if you can provide regular access to water you will have a very happy companion. It is this love of the outdoors that makes Golden Retrievers such a wonderful breed of family dog. They are willing to participate in any family outing, such as walks, hikes, or camping trips.
Due to their constant need for affection, this breed does not like to spend a lot of time alone, so having children in the family can be a real advantage. Their nature is to be very forgiving and somewhat protective, which makes them perfect for children. Keep in mind that young children should not be left alone with any dog, regardless of behavior, as any breed will become defensive if it senses harm or danger. Also, given its size, small children could be knocked over or knocked over innocently.
Barking is generally not a problem with these retrievers. The exceptions are 1) if the dog is bored he will tend to be vocal. Regular exercise and outdoor activities should alleviate this behavior. 2) their propensity to be a watchdog makes them aware of strangers and they may bark in response.
There are three types of Golden Retriever:
1. british type – legs shorter, snout shorter and wider, tail shorter and generally heavier, colors are shades of gold or cream.
two. american type – They tend to be lighter and longer, the coat is water repellent and thicker, the color is golden.
3. canadian type – The coat is thinner than the American type and the color is golden but darker.
The breed lives for approximately 11-12 years and with annual veterinary check-ups it should be healthy and well adjusted. They are known to have hip dysplasia, so be careful when evaluating a puppy at the time of purchase. Also, be careful about their diets as weight problems can be seen in the breed. An average of 4 cups of quality dog food per day will help control this trend.
These retrievers shed most months of the year, so regular weekly grooming sessions are recommended. During those specific times when you notice increased shedding, you may need daily brushing. Given the nature of this dog, they love these sessions and they are great bonding experiences.
