Vocational education is a preparation for qualified jobs, this is the preparation based on manual and practical activities. The student directly participates and develops expertise in a particular group of techniques or technology and is sometimes referred to as technical education.
In the Philippines, Vocational/Technical Schools and their curriculum were accredited and approved by the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA). TESDA affiliated schools offer a short course that will last 3 months and 2 years. Upon graduation, students take the TESDA Licensure Exam to earn a certificate or diploma. Some courses for this are automotive technology, electronic technology, nursing assistant, hotel and restaurant management, computer technology, writing. Short courses can choose from cleaning, cooking, food and beverage, welders, etc. Before, these vocational training courses were associated with the activities of the lower social classes. But not for now, as vocational education has developed and opened up many potential jobs and opportunities locally and abroad.
Today, we are living and struggling in crisis. Many businesses had been closed due to the recession. Thousands of people lost their jobs. Even OFWs are affected. Vocational training and education had been the answer for them to start a new career. The government launched a scholarship program for youth who do not attend school and for students who cannot continue their university studies. This scholarship has been the demand of many parents. Many believe that the short course diploma and certificate can be used to gain advantage and competencies.
In fact, if you try to search for a job online, you will notice that there is an extensive list of skilled job openings on certain job sites. Countries like Australia, UK, Canada, Middle East countries have a high demand for skilled workers. The problem with this is that most skilled workers cannot afford the high placement fees and document processing of employment agencies. Good news, there are some that offer a salary deduction.
