How is the weather in Mauritius?

Mauritius is one of the most beautiful and accessible islands in the world, a true tropical paradise. Mauritius is located off the east coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. This unique geographical position gives Mauritius a mild and relatively pleasant climate throughout the year. So what is the best time to go to Mauritius and what are the weather variations like?
Mauritius has a fascinating mix of microclimates, all of which are quite temperate. While locals complain about the ‘cold’ weather during ‘winter’ in Mauritius, the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees C on the coast. This means that you can still swim at midnight in the sea in Mauritius under a starry sky in the dead of winter. This gives the country a strategic advantage in that you can visit Mauritius almost at any time of the year.

So when is the best time to visit Mauritius? Well, it depends on what you want to go there. Excluding high cyclone season (January and February), December through March are the best months for diving, when the waters are clearest; June to August is best for surfing; and October through April is excellent for sport fishing, when large predators feed close to shore. Mauritius ‘winter’ occurs from May to November, when daytime temperatures drop from sticky to mild. With less rain and humidity, this is one of the best times to visit.

The least pleasant period is from December to April, when the long days can be too hot and humid for some and the threat of cyclones is in the air. If you have to go to Mauritius in the hottest season and you don’t particularly like hot days, you can always avoid sunny beaches. Even when it’s above 30 degrees C on the coast, inland cities on higher ground are usually cooler. Curepipe, for example, is a city located on the central plateau, one of the highest regions of Mauritius. The difference in temperature between this town and a seaside resort can be significant. The choice is yours. Obviously it’s more entertaining on the coast and you can always choose a room with air conditioning. Stay away from the beaches in the midday sun and venture out for long romantic walks along the sandy beaches of Mauritius at sunset.

So, when is the best time to go to Mauritius? Because there are no extreme weather conditions, except for the rare cyclones that last a few days, you can go practically anytime. That, of course, gives Mauritius a strategic advantage over other tourist destinations. In fact, the country and its climate are attracting an ever-increasing number of tourists, putting Mauritius on the top lists of world vacation destinations.
