Why do we find magic tricks so fascinating?

Magic is truly an art of illusion. Magicians have entertained and confused audiences with sleight of hand for centuries. It is believed that the origin of magic for entertainment originally started in ancient Egypt. Artists in those days tried to convince their audience that they had magical powers, until it was deemed that it was no longer safe. Magic was inevitably seen as witchcraft. Anyone who did so ran the risk of being hunted down and hanged. In the 16th century, magicians resurfaced in a new way; they called themselves entertainers and no longer claimed to have unnatural abilities. However, they were not yet likely to explain the tricks to the audience.

It was in the 18th century that a dynamic and flamboyant Italian magician named Giovanni Giuseppe Pinetti brought card magic to the broader realm of theater. Robert Houdini is now recognized as the first real interpreter of “modern” magic. Houdini gained his fame in the middle of the 19th century. Howard Thurston was probably the first master card manipulator, famous in the early 1900s for his “Rising Card” trick and his uncanny ability to launch his cards to the farthest reaches of his audience. In the company of Thurston, many other famous magicians have created and perfected tricks by implementing playing cards. Dai Vernon, Harry Houdini and Charles Bertram. Today, notable magicians include David Blaine and Criss Angel. You’ve probably seen them both on TV.

There is likely not a home in the United States that does not have at least one deck of common cards. Also, at some point in our lives, it is very likely that everyone has tried to perform a magic trick or two. However, card tricks are not as easy as they seem. The good ones require excellent hand / eye coordination and manual dexterity.
