What will Hutson Mason do for UGA?

Three-star quarterback recruit Hutson Mason has committed to playing football for Georgia next year. Mason, who played at Lassiter High School in Marietta, broke many major high school passing records and led his school to the 2009 GHSA playoffs. He only threw ten interceptions during that season. Five of those interceptions came in Lassiter’s loss to Colquitt County.

Mason is a 6’3″, 190-pound quarterback. He is ranked as the 97th best player in Georgia and the 68th best quarterback in the country. He also had offers that he was considering from Mississippi State and several other schools.

However, what will Hutson Mason end up doing for the University of Georgia? First of all, Mark Richt originally didn’t want to sign a quarterback this year. This was because he had two incoming freshmen, Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger. Both are five-star quarterbacks, and Mettenberger is about the same size as Tim Tebow.

For those reasons, I think Hutson Mason will be no better than a third-row quarterback during his time at UGA. When he chooses between five star recruits and a three star recruit, he will choose the five star ones. No doubt about that. Additionally, Murray and Mettenberger have already practiced with the Dawgs for a year (their redshirt year) and thus will likely be ready to play college football next year. Mason won’t be.

That’s why I think Hutson Mason will end up being transferred away from the University of Georgia after the 2010 season. I think he’ll realize that Murray and Mettenberger will always be ahead of him at quarterback. As for where he will transfer to, I have no idea, but I really think he will.
