Use It Or Lose It: A Blueprint For A Successful Exercise Program

You’ve heard the expression “use it or lose it” a thousand times. As we age, it’s important that we stay active and keep our bodies moving. If you’re over forty and not very active, you’ve probably noticed the size and tone of your muscles disappearing. Well, read on because I’ve discovered a great way to start an exercise program that you can gradually increase over time.

Let’s first discuss why exercise is so important in the first place.

Regular exercise helps prevent diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other illnesses. Plus, you’ll improve stamina, strengthen and tone those muscles, improve your flexibility, manage your weight, and generally improve your quality of life.

Now here is the plan that I followed to start with and now stick to.

Always start slowly. If you want to jog, start walking. Start walking, say one mile a day for two weeks, and as your muscles get used to it, increase the miles to two. This is also good for weightlifting, start with less weight and fewer reps. There is nothing more discouraging than waking up with overworked and sore muscles. In fact, most people overdo it at first, causing them to take a break from their routine. This often causes them to stop altogether and fear starting again because of the pain they anticipate.

For years I overdid it and did exactly what I mentioned, causing me to stop altogether. So here’s my advice for starting and maintaining a successful exercise program. Choose a combination of strengthening and aerobic-type exercises that you enjoy, keeping in mind that you have plenty of time to develop. Be patient and go slow, then gradually increase your weight, reps, and miles until you feel comfortable. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying a solid program and find you’ll be looking forward to your next session. Good luck.
