Parks in Kolkata

Kolkata, the cultural capital of India, is also known for its aesthetic urban décor and beautifully designed parks. If you take a trip around the city, you will be surprised to see many parks and gardens for children, maintained by the Kolkata Municipality. Some of the parks are, in fact, a reflection of the heritage and elegant culture of the ‘city of joy’.

Maidan, the largest park in Kolkata, is located at the crossroads of the city’s posh street, Race Course. Maidan, which literally means “field” in Bengali, is surrounded by skyscrapers and heritage buildings. Victoria Memorial Hall and Eden Gardens are a stone’s throw from the Maidan.

In Salt Lake, you’ll find another awesome park, which is basically an amusement park. The park is often referred to as Disney Land of West Bengal due to its family recreation options and water games. The park was established in 1991 with the concept of providing educational recreation and fun activities. Nalban Boating Complex next to Nicco Park also offers boating and other water activities for visitors.

millennium park

Millennium Park, another well-regarded park that is located on the east bank of the Ganges River, is a public park. The 2.5 km long beautifully landscaped park is a hot spot for couples and families alike. From Strand Road to Babughat, the entire park is packed with fun activities for kids and lanes for joggers.

Rabindra Sarobar

South Kolkata exhibits an artificial lake known as Rabindra Sarobar. Calcutta Improvement Trust (CIT) in the year 1920 felt the need to turn the marshy land into a well-developed lake and park. The lake has been named after the great poet, Rabindranath Tagore.

Alipore Zoological Gardens

How can we forget the world class zoological garden, Alipore Zoo? During the British era (1876), the zoo was built to give pleasure to the citizens of Kolkata as well as people who came from other states. Built on an area of ​​46.5 acres, the zoo is home to a wide variety of mammals and birds.

Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden or Calcutta Botanic Garden

This exceptionally beautiful and striking botanical garden is home to 12,000 species of plants. The garden was established in 1787, and till now it carries the legacy of Kolkata.

Deshapriya Park

South Kolkata also has a beautiful park, where young children can train in cricket, tennis or football. The park right next to Priya Cinema Hall is also known for hosting Durga Puja.

Mohar Kunja

Mohar Kunja, which was previously a citizen park, is now converted into an urban public park. The park, established in 2005, is well known for its musical fountains and incomparable aesthetic charm.

Central Park

On one edge of Kolkata, Salt Lake boasts the second largest park in the city. The well-maintained Central Park (Banabitan) is roped off with government buildings and well-maintained trees and gardens.

Apart from these aforementioned parks in Kolkata, there are some more impressive amusement parks and playgrounds spread throughout the city.
