Healthy Muscles Matter, also known as Muscle Myths, is an interesting short children’s book written by Kevin Dunn. It features nine different characters who live in Dunn’s hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The book was written as a response to the lack of gym clubs and other options for children in the area. For example, there was no children’s baseball team in this town, so all of the children played on their own inside their school’s dugout.

In this story, the main character, Michael, has dreams of playing ball in a Little League game one day. Unfortunately, he continues to remain overweight, and is not interested in lifting weights or working out to get a healthier body. As a result, his parents are constantly trying to get him interested in exercise and in learning how to lift weights, but he just seems to be unwilling to make any changes in his life.

Fortunately for the Dunn’s, another child who moves in with them, Garikiparithi, also shows signs of interest in fitness and exercise. However, despite her willingness to work out with the other boys, Garikiparithi still finds it difficult to do so, despite her obvious enjoyment of weight lifting. She seems to always find herself holding onto her tiny little dumbbells instead of picking up a bigger weight to lift things. Because she is afraid she might grow weak from lifting too many weights, she keeps from working out.

Michael and Garikiparithi come to realize that Garikiparithi must also be interested in working out and gaining healthy muscle mass if she wants to play ball someday. They encourage her to start lifting weights and learn how to move properly. Michael teaches her the basic exercises that people use when lifting weights, but he and Garikiparithi put her in a variety of difficult positions to stretch her muscles. They also give her chores, like cleaning the pool table and taking the garbage out, so she can spend some time moving around. Eventually, Garikiparithi makes a decision to put on weight.

After a couple months of lifting weights, Michael and Garikiparithi realize that Garikiparithi has lost interest in getting moving. It takes them a bit of time to figure out why, but after speaking with their pediatrician, they discover that her pediatric bones are actually coming out of place. This makes her mobility even more challenging. Her muscles are not growing correctly. As a result, she may not be able to put on weight, and she is not getting the healthy muscles she needs to be as strong as she could be.
