All about MTRJ

The connector was produced and designed by AMP, and was later standardized as Fiber Optic Connector Intermittability Standards or FOCIS 12 in EIA/TIA – 604 – 12.

The MTRJ is one of the recently increasing small form factor connectors that are commonly used for networking applications. The MTRJ connector was designed to meet the demands of the market in a much smaller, easier, lower cost and easier to use application. The MTRJ reduces the space required for wall plates, panels, and cabinets by approximately 50 percent across the entire network. This small factor connector is best for “fiber to the desk” applications. Its size is considerably smaller than that of a normal telephone jack and it is just as easy to disconnect and connect.

How are MTRJ connectors connected?

The edition of the MTRJ connector used to stop the cable is a male receptacle, with 2 steel alignment pins, that fits into the female receptacle. The MTRJ connector is fully secured in place with the RJ45-style clip. The fiber is cut and placed in a ferrule (the circular plastic or metal ring) where it is automatically held in place. Successful MT-RJ functionality requires exact alignment of the 2 alignment pins (and holes) and fibers.

In period cutting practice, a good cutting tool is required to obtain a flat, clean, less than one degree perpendicular cut. When the slit has a larger angle, the air gap can be created now causing loss of reflection and crippling attenuation. The flat face of MTRJ emphasizes this loss of airspace indication. The fiber must be installed so that it is completely flush with the front of the connector.
